Foundation trains law enforcement agents on counter human trafficking in N/East

AREWA AGENDA – The International and Ibero-American Foundation for Administration and Public Policies (FIIAPP) has trained 75 law enforcement officials in the fight against human trafficking and migrant smuggling in the Northeast.

Participants were from the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC). ) in Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Yobe. and Taraba states.

Project team leader Rafael Molina had this to say at the end of the three-day training exercise on Wednesday in Maiduguri.

He said the training was designed to build staff capacity in the identification of migrant smuggling and human trafficking for successful investigation and prosecution of perpetrators.

Represented, Technical Advisor, Criminal Investigation of the project, Molina said that the exercise was part of the Action Against Trafficking in Persons and Illicit Smuggling of Migrants (A-TIPSOM) well implemented with support from the European Union.

“The A-TIPSOM project is part of the 11th European Development Fund (EDF) signed between the European Union and the Federal Government of Nigeria.

“The general objective of this project is to contribute to the series of initiatives of the Nigerian government to decrease the proportion of trafficking in persons (TIP) and smuggling of migrants (SOM) at the national and regional levels, and between Nigeria and the EU, with special emphasis on women and children.

This is done through direct support to NPF, NIS, NAPTIP and the civil society organizations represented against child trafficking, abuse and labor (NACTAL),” he said.

Also speaking, Orakwue Arinze, NAPTIP’s Director of Workforce Training and Development, said human trafficking portends economic and security implications in Nigeria if not effectively contained.

He said the training would not only reposition officers but also ensure synergy between the various law enforcement agencies in the fight against human trafficking.
