KSHA Passes 2024 Pre-marital Screening Bill

The Kano State House of Assembly KNHA has passed the Kano state pre-marital screening bill 2024.

This was a sequel to deliberations on the committee of the whole house and the third reading of the bill by the deputy clerk Alhaji Nasiru Magaji during a plenary session presided over by the speaker Alhaji Jibril Isma’il Falgore.

After careful deliberations, the House unanimously adopted and passed the Kano State Pre-marital screening bill 2024.

The bill sponsored by the majority Lawan Hussaini Dala seeks to compel intending couples to undergo HIV, hepatitis and sickle cell anaemia screening before marriage.

Shortly after the passage of the bill, the Majority Leader of the House who doubles as  member representing  Dala constituency Lawan Hussein explained that any person intending to marry shall first submit himself for medical examinations.

He pointed out that the bill was considered and passed after the 3rd reading, following various legislative processes.

The leader further stressed that the bill was passed due to the current situation where the state is battling different health issues, including HIV as people go into marriages without medical screening.

Lawan noted that if signed into law, the bill would save many lives and curb the spread of life-threatening diseases.

“The bill will safeguard the health of citizens by institutionalising pre-marital testing to check the spread of diseases like hepatitis, HIV and sickle cell anaemia”

The house adjourned it’s sitting in a motion moved by the majority leader Lawan Hussaini Dala.
