How Kogi LG  Chair Slumped, Died  at Reconciliation Meeting

Tragedy struck the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State on Friday after the party’s local government chairman, Oyewole Mayowa Solomon, reportedly slumped and died during a reconciliation meeting in Iyara, the council headquarters.

Solomon was said to have suddenly collapsed while participating in the meeting held at the Iyara Town Hall.

The meeting, convened by a former chairman of Ijumu Local Government Area, Funsho Olumoko, was aimed at bringing together party leaders and stakeholders to resolve differences and strengthen unity within the APC ahead of future political engagements.

According to reports, participants immediately made efforts to revive Solomon and secure medical assistance. He was subsequently rushed to a hospital in Kabba, where he reportedly died shortly afterwards.

His sudden death reportedly threw the meeting into confusion, with party leaders and other participants said to have been left shocked and devastated by the incident.

The meeting was held against the backdrop of ongoing efforts by APC stakeholders in Ijumu to resolve internal disagreements and consolidate the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Earlier this month, APC stakeholders in the local government had gathered in Iyara, where they endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo for second terms.

The stakeholders also called for greater unity among party members. However, the earlier meeting was reportedly disrupted by disagreements over the leadership of the local government, with Solomon and some other government functionaries said to have walked out.

Olumoko, who convened Friday’s reconciliation meeting, is a former chairman of the local government and has previously been tasked by the Ijumu Consultative Forum with helping to reconcile political stakeholders in the area.

The meeting was expected to bring together political leaders, local government and ward executives, women and youth leaders, as well as government appointees from the 15 wards in Ijumu.

Solomon’s death is likely to cast a fresh shadow over the party’s reconciliation efforts in the local government, coming barely two weeks after stakeholders publicly called for unity and expressed support for the APC leadership ahead of the 2027 elections.

As of the time of filing this report, the circumstances surrounding Solomon’s sudden death had not been officially disclosed.

Attempts to obtain an official statement from the APC on the incident were ongoing.
