Miner Killed As Suspected Militias Open Fire On Workers At Illegal Mining Site In Plateau
A miner identified as Dachung Dacholom has been killed by suspected Fulani militia members at an illegal mining site in Rim community, Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The incident reportedly occurred at about 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 22, 2026, when troops of Sector 6, Operation ENDURING PEACE, deployed in Rim responded to reports of sporadic gunshots around the mining site.
According to counterinsurgency expert and security analyst Zagazola Makama, military sources said the troops, alongside personnel of the Department of State Services (DSS), arrived at the scene and found Dacholom’s body.
He was reportedly shot by the suspected attackers, who had opened fire on miners at the site before fleeing into the surrounding high grounds.
The troops subsequently searched the area in an attempt to locate the attackers but did not make contact with them.
Dacholom’s remains were later handed over to his family for burial.
Following the incident, troops reportedly intensified patrols and security operations in the area to prevent further attacks and de-escalate tensions in the community.
