Kano Community Adopts Zero-Tolerance Policy on Drug Abuse
The Gaya Emirate Council in Kano State has adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards drug abuse and trafficking, directing traditional leaders across the emirate to apprehend suspected offenders and hand them over to the appropriate authorities for prosecution.
The Emir of Gaya, Alhaji Aliyu Ibrahim Abdulkadir, disclosed this on Wednesday when he received members of the Multi-Agency Task Force on Drug Abuse and Trafficking at his palace in Gaya.
The emir said ward, village and district heads had been directed to take action against suspected drug offenders, regardless of their social status or position.
He said the council had also introduced drug screening for individuals being considered for appointments within the emirate.
According to him, the measure was aimed at strengthening efforts to prevent drug abuse and ensure that people appointed to positions of responsibility were not involved in substance abuse.
The emir described drug abuse and trafficking as serious threats that required urgent and coordinated action from government, traditional institutions and other stakeholders.

He commended the Kano State Government for establishing the task force and urged all stakeholders to support its activities.
He also called for stronger prosecution of individuals found guilty of drug abuse or trafficking, saying screening alone would not be sufficient without decisive legal action against offenders.
The emir assured the task force of the full support of the Gaya Emirate Council and expressed confidence that its members would make significant progress in tackling drug abuse and trafficking in the state.
Earlier, the Chairman of the task force, Muhyi Magaji Rimin Gado, who was represented by Dr Aminu Magashi, said the delegation visited the emir to seek his blessing and support for the task force’s activities.
Magashi said the task force would soon organise a sensitisation programme to educate members of the public on the dangers associated with drug abuse and trafficking.
He said Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf was committed to addressing the problem, adding that the task force had recorded some achievements since its establishment.
He expressed optimism that stronger collaboration with traditional rulers and other stakeholders would help expand the campaign against drug abuse and trafficking across Kano State.
The visit ended with the emir praying for wisdom, strength and protection for members of the task force as they carry out their responsibilities.
