Kano NLC Organises Symposium Ahead of May Day Celebration

AREWA AGENDA – The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Kano State Chapter has organized a symposium at the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Secretariat to celebrate Workers’ Day in Kano State.

The Chairman of the NLC, Comrade Kabiru Inuwa said the symposium organized by the Congress is to pave way for the celebration of workers day with lectures to equip Labour Union Members with vital knowledge about trade union activism of modern day.

“This day is a free May Day, we usually gather here every year to pave way for the celebration of May Day which is the 1st May of every year. We normally do symposiums, lectures in relation to labor matters.

He further said “These lectures are intended to equip our members with vital knowledge of Trade Union activism of modern day which is more of scientific. We are happy that we have inculcated a lot of knowledge to our Comrades”

While sending the goodwill message to the workers of the state Comr Kabiru urged the workers to be steadfast and face the challenges they are facing unanimously.

He later decried the deduction of pensioners’ money on a monthly basis

“We sincerely believe that this is not supposed to be, in a normal society you cannot deprive a retires civil servant of his entitlement after serving for 35 years, this is our challenge”

He concluded by thanking the state government for the payment of salary and promotions with welfarism on a timely basis whereby he argued that the Kano state workers are ahead of almost all the state in the country.

The Kano State Commissioner of Information, Comr Muhammad Garba who graced the event urged the workers to be united and ensure to fight for their rights with harmonious relationship between the unions and the government as a way to ensure progress in the state and the country Nigeria at large.

In his part the resource person at the event Profesor Murtala Muhammad said “workers are actually enslaved especially in the last decade, they are not actually paid their owned right, they are also not taking care of, they are not paid a living wage.

He emphasized that “What they are paid is something that cannot take them home, their take home are not actually taking them home. What they are paid cannot take care of their health, education of their children. The labour leadership need to do a lot to rescue their own members”
