UK Govt to spend 6.2 million pounds on mutual accountability framework in Kano-FCDO

AREWA AGENDA – The Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office,FCDO,Development Director Dr.Chris Pycroft has said the UK Government this year(2022) will spend Six point two million pounds on Health,Education and Core Governance through the Mutual Accountability Framework in Kano State.

According to him good progress has been made in mutual accountability framework because in 2021 FCDO committed five point five million pounds in support of Kano development ambitions.

He stated this on Wednesday during the 2nd Mutual Accountability Framework Strategic Dialogue meeting between Kano State Government and the UK Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office held at Government House,Kano.

According to him Kano MAF is an important initiative Not just in terms of building a long-term sustainable relationship between the government and people of Kano and the government and people of the UK.

Dr. Chris Pycroft also explained Many across the international community – not just in Nigeria but around the world are watching as it defines a new way for the international community to support locally owned and driven development.

Saying that We know that Nigeria is entering its next election cycle. As the largest democracy in Africa, Nigeria’s elections are of global importance in
demonstrating that the will of ordinary people is to be respected, and that leaders serve their communities and Whatever the outcome of the election here in Kano, the UK government will stay engaged. This is a long-lasting partnership that will support the
government and the people of Kano into the future.

Dr. Pycroft added that We need to strength budgetary processes – not just domestic resource mobilisation, but also the release of finances to support development objectives because Mutual Accountability Framework and Strategic Dialogue coordinating the development response from the UK government to ensure it is fully aligned with Kano state government priorities. We are here to help.

On his part while declaring the occasion open, Kano State Governor Dr.Abdullahi Umar Ganduje who was represented by his deputy Dr.Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna said the aim of the meeting is to review the commitment of the 1st Kano Mutual Accountability Framework which was signed last year to ascertain the journey so far with regard to implementation of key activities.

“The Kano Mutual Accountability Framework sets out the reform initiatives the Kano State Government introduced and the support FCDO will provide to drive overall growth and development of Kano State”.

“The revised Kano Mutual Accountability Framework will continue to monitor concrete reforms that will support good governance,improvement in economic recovery,investment and also reduce poverty through human capital development particularly on health,education and social protection the Governor said”.

He further assured the UK-FCDO and other development partners that Kano State Government is fully committed towards the success of the Kano Mutual Accountability Framework.

During the occasion, the Governor launched State policy documents on Development Plan,Social Protection,Food and Nutrition and Multi Sectoral Plan of Action.

Also speaking state Chairman Technical Committee on Kano Mutual Accountability Framework Alh.Rabi’u Suleiman Bich has said commend the U.K. Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) for coming up with this laudable arrangement.

Adding that It is as a result of this joint commitment that quite a number of successes have been achieved and progress recorded, particularly in relation to the development of some policies, laws, training and capacity building for Kano State Government Officials.

He further explained that the partnership has also complimented Government efforts in the delivery of services as huge resources were expended in the cause of implementing the signed document, this commitment has also strengthen the long term relationship between United Kingdom Government and Kano State , which improved on the focus of both the Government and FCDO programmes and projects.

Noting that It is not out of context to state that in the course of implementation, certain challenges and obstacles were observed, based on which the call for a review of the 1st KANMAF to accommodate more of “asks” and “offers” that were not implemented / accomplished during the implementation of the Kano MAF

Alh.Rabi’u Suleiman Bichi said state government will continue to appreciate the support provided by UK Government to the Government and the good people of Kano State. And the immense investment made, specifically by FCDO in Kano State across Health, Education, Nutrition, Governance, Peace and Security of the people which will be counting towards improving the lives of Kano citizens.
