Sokotc Cleric Stabbed After Jumu’at Prayer, as Alleged Attacker Killed

Tension gripped parts of Sokoto metropolis on Friday after prominent Islamic cleric, Sheikh Musa Lukuwa, was stabbed shortly after leading the Jumu’at prayer.

The attack reportedly followed allegations that the cleric made blasphemous remarks concerning the biological parents of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

Sources said the alleged attacker confronted Sheikh Lukuwa after the Friday prayer before stabbing him.

The cleric reportedly sustained injuries and was taken to a hospital, where he was receiving treatment.

Following the attack, some of the Sheikh’s followers reportedly descended on the alleged assailant and killed him.

The incident has heightened concerns over the dangers of religiously sensitive confrontations and the resort to mob action over allegations of blasphemy.

The development has also renewed calls for restraint and due process in handling allegations capable of provoking violence.

The Public Relations Officer of the Sokoto State Police Command, DSP Ahmad Rufae, confirmed that the incident occurred but declined to provide further details.

As of the time of filing this report, the identity of the alleged attacker, the extent of Sheikh Lukuwa’s injuries and the circumstances surrounding the killing remained unclear.

The cleric’s condition could not be independently verified beyond reports that he was receiving medical treatment.

Security authorities are expected to monitor the situation closely because of the religious dimension of the incident and the possibility of further tension.
