INEC schedules Dawakin Kudu Assembly by-election in Kano
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed Saturday, September 19, 2026, to conduct a legislative by-election for the vacant Dawakin Kudu State Constituency seat in Kano State, alongside four other legislative constituencies across the country.
The commission announced the schedule in an official statement posted on its X (formerly Twitter) handle on Friday, confirming that voting will take place at designated polling units from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Vacancy in Kano State Assembly
The upcoming poll in Kano follows the move of former Dawakin Kudu State Constituency lawmaker, Rabiu Shuaibu, to the House of Representatives.
Shuaibu, who previously represented Dawakin Kudu Constituency in the Kano State House of Assembly, contested and won the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency bye-election held in June on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He was elected to fill the federal seat that became vacant following the death of former lawmaker Muhammad Danjuma-Hassan.

National Coverage Across Four States
Beyond Kano, the electoral umpire listed four other legislative vacancies across Gombe, Bauchi and Delta states:
- Gombe State:Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency, following the death of lawmaker Yaya Bauchi Tongo in June 2026.
- Bauchi State: Sakwa State Constituency, vacated following the death of its occupant, and Disina State Constituency, following the lawmaker’s resignation to contest a local government chairmanship position.
- Delta State: Udu State Constituency, declared vacant by the Delta State House of Assembly after representative Collins Egbetamah defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
“Voting will take place at polling units within the affected constituencies from 8:30 a.m. and end at 2:30 p.m.,” the commission stated.
INEC emphasised that preparations, including the electronic submission of polling agent details and observer accreditation, are underway to ensure smooth logistics across all five affected constituencies on election day.
