2023: Kano Police, AMG Foundation Hosts Youth Peace Summit

AREWA AGENDA – The Kano State Police Command in collaboration with Aminu Magashi Garba Foundation and Youth Society for the Prevention of Infectious Diseases and Social Vices (YOSPIS) hosted the 2023 Youth Peace Summit on Wednesday at Lebanon Club, Bompai Kano State.

The summit which aimed to Combat Fake News and Hate Speech assembled different media organisations, Kano Youths social media influencers and a number of Civil Society Organisations.

In his remark the founder of Aminu Magashi Garba Foundation, Dr Aminu Magashi Garba said “the essence of the summit is to raise awareness and say no to fake news and hate speech during an election as you are aware in the next couple of weeks election is going to start in Kano and Nigeria, so we want young people to be sensitised, to ensure that they are not been used by any political actor to cause any havoc or violence or spread fake news on social media”

He further vowed to continue partnering with Kano State Police Command in making sure Kano is secured and peaceful before, during and after election with the engagement of meaningful community members, youths and media organisations.

On her part the Executive Director of YOSPIS, Zainab Nasir Ahmad said the summit focused on the theme of the day because the two concepts are becoming norms among young people who use social media without understanding the danger it caused and how it is a threat to the National Development, peace and harmony.

“Now that is campaign time bad eggs will use hate speech and fake news to cause havoc, tension and crisis in the nation. It is our responsibility as youth leaders to collaborate with security agencies to curb the spread of fake news and tackle hate speech” Zainab added

While declaring the summit opened, Kano State Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Dauda reiterated that the purpose of the summit is to bring Social Media stakeholders including youth organizations to come together to discuss proactive measures needed to be put in place to combat hate speech and fake news for a violent-free and successful 2023 election process.

CP Dauda further revealed that “In our peace summit involving political party leaders, we discussed proactive measures to ensure peaceful election processes. Also, in our Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) meetings, we have mapped-out strategies to provide adequate security coverage in all activities before, during and after the 2023 General Election.”

He later urged the Youths to interact and communicate with one another, share ideas and see the issue of security as everyone’s business by discouraging fake news, hate speech and ensuring a peaceful election.

Papers were presented by experts on how to figure out fake news through multiple technologies of fact check in Media Technology. Also, Security and Legal experts shared the knowledge of penalties for whoever spread fake news or champions of hate speech.

In presence were Youth from different Youth-led Organizations, Social Media Influencers, Online Media Editors, G-30 Partners, Spokespersons & Social Media Team of All Kano State 2023 Gubernatorial Candidates, Public Relations Officers of All Security Agencies in Kano State, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Kano State Chapter and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) participated in the summit.
