HYPPADEC earmarks N900m for Yauri water works rehabilitation

AREWA AGENDA – Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (HYPPADEC) is to spend over N900 million for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the 42-year-old Yauri Water Works in Kebbi State.

Managing Director of the Commission, Abubakar Yelwa, who briefed newsmen during an inspection tour at water project, said similar interventions would be extended to other power producing communities with series of challenges because of the unfulfilled agreement reached when the Kanji dam was constructed.

“I think for now, based on the first meeting we had with the Kebbi State government, we have penciled down N900 millions for the project and we are ready to do more as we access the situation.. One thing I want to emphasis here is the encouragement, commitment of the Kebbi State government on this project. I am motivated by their support and we are committed to do the same to other power producing communities “.

Emir of Yauri, Muhammad Abdullahi commended them for their prompt action, saying the agency was doing humanitarian services to the power producing community that had been neglected for years.

The monarch said the intervention would put an end to decades of water supply problems, experienced in Yauri town and nearby villages.

General Manager of Kebbi State Water Board, Zayyanu Shehu commended HYPPADEC for carry along staff and engineers of the board, who have been managing the water works since its creation in 1980. He said when the rehabilitation of the project is completed, it would be easier for the staff on ground to maintain it.
