Galvanizing Community Action Against GBV in Kano State
AREWA AGENDA – A group of 30 trained gender advocates on weekends has conducted a community step-down training across 3 Local Government Areas of Kano State as part of the activities under the Canadian High Commission-supported project implemented by Connected Development (CODE).
The project aims to galvanize mass action against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Kano (GMAA-K) by demanding the passage of the harmonized Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act and the Child Protection Bill (CPB) in Kano State.
Speaking at the event, the project lead in Kano State, Mr. Abbas Adamu applauded the GMAA-K Champions for their selfless service to humanity, while at the same time encouraging the participants to seize this learning opportunity and acquire enough knowledge for the betterment of their community.

“This community step-down training is an opportunity to understand the legal framework and procedure for monitoring, reporting, and documenting all forms of GBV abuses. I hope that at the end of this training, you should be able to cascade the learnings to other community members who are not fortunate to benefit from this training” Abbas said.
“It is imperative that we join our voices to call on the Kano State government to domesticate the Child Protection Bill (CPB) and the harmonized Penal Code/Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act for posterity’s sake. We have done it with the Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL), let’s do it again” He concluded.
“Connected Development (CODE) is doing a wonderful job of empowering grassroots communities. The organizers and facilitators of this community step-down training did very well and I will like to form part of the community champions in my community” said one of the beneficiaries.
