EFCC Trains Journalists On Investigative, Financial Crimes Reportage in Borno 

AREWA AGENDA – The Chairman Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mr. Abdulrashed Bawa has tasked journalists in the North East to focus their reportage on fraudulent activities perpetrated by some Non-governmental Oganisations, NGOs in the region.

Mr. Bawa gave the charge during a one-day workshop for journalists on Financial Crimes Reporting in Maiduguri.

Represented by the North East Zonal Commander, Mr. Oshodi Johnson, the Chairman observed that the region has witnessed the proliferation of NGOs, where some engaged in fraudulent activities and terrorism financing.

He cited the example of Mama Boko Haram who was investigated by the Commission, prosecuted and convicted for using her NGO to swindle unsuspecting members of the public.

“As a consequence to the insurgency in this region, we now have a proliferation of Non-governmental organisations doing charity work in the region which is commendable, unfortunately, the activities of a very few charlatans have called the altruistic commitment of others to question ” Bawa stressed.

The EFCC Chairman pointed out that there are new mechanisms and legislations to tackle illicit financial flaws which include the Money Laundering Act 2022, Proceeds of Crimes Act 2022 and Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act 2022.

He assured of the Commission’s commitment to eradicating economic and financial crimes in the country.

During the training, experts made presentations on the new Money Laundering Framework, investigative journalism and Nigeria’s fight against Corruption and Digital payment system.

Chairman Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ Borno State Council Comrade Dauda Iliya described the training as the first of its kind in the state, requested the Commission to organise more capacity building for journalists to further equip them with skills to carry out investigative reports.

Thirty journalists from Borno and Yobe states participated in the workshop.
