BVAS Failure: PDP demands cancellation of elections in Southern Borno

AREWA AGENDA – Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has asked Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to review election results being announced for the Southern Borno area of Borno State.

According to a statement signed by a spokesman of the PDP campaign, Dr. Daniel Bwala, results that were not announced at collation centres should not be presented at the national collation centre.

The statement reads in part: “In specific reference to Borno State, we reject in totality all areas where elections were conducted without the use of Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), in compliance with provisions of the new Electoral Act. We have concrete evidence at our disposal to confirm these facts.

“Election results produced from such areas will not be accepted by our party. We, therefore, call for outright cancellation of votes produced from such areas, like Southern Borno Senatorial District.

“The entire results of Bayo and Shani councils, where there was gross violation and complete non-usage of BVAS for accreditation before voting, cannot be accepted.

“In Gwoza Council, specifically Ngoshe ward, BVAS was not used. In Northern and Central Borno, we observed similar gross violations.

“There was a case where BVAS malfunctioned and could not capture or work properly in Bayo, Shani and Gwoza councils, Ngoshe ward, to be precise.”

“Voters were not allowed to vote in some wards in Gwoza. The incidence of not using BVAS in some units across the senatorial district also pervaded the entire process.

“Also in Rivers State, there were incidents of BVAS bypass and violence in Obio/Akpor council, and Etche, Omuma and Ikwere councils.

“We call on the chairman of INEC, who also doubles as the Chief National Collation Officer, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, to take a critical look at these observations and ensure rules guiding the electoral processes are followed to the letter.
