A socio-cultural pressure group, the Arewa Economic Forum (AEF), has recognized the Kano State Government’s strides in revamping education in Kano.

According to the group, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has so far demonstrated ‘pure’ commitment towards repositioning Kano’s education system, as evidenced in the re-introduction of the State’s foreign post-graduate scholarship awards to brilliant Kano graduates.

  1. AEF’s commendation was given by its Chairman, Alh. Ibrahim Shehu Dandakata, on Tuesday at a press conference in Abuja.

Shehu Dandakata, while speaking at the press conference, called on the Governors of the entire Northern States to introduce deliberate policies that will address the rot in the education sector of their various States, as the Kano State Government has started doing.

He recalled that the Kano State Government recently paid the school fees of about 7,000 indigent students of Bayero University Kano (BUK), and as well ensured that parents of privately-owned schools in the state are no longer unjustly exploited.

Dandakata also said that the state government made sure it slashes the cost of education in the state, where he said people are making ‘so much money’.

“I think the Kaduna State Government is also doing a lot in terms of fixing the State’s education sector. But so far, the Kano State Government is setting the pace,” he said.

He vowed that their forum will keep the governors and ministers of northern extraction on their toes, by ensuring that their performances are reviewed periodically.

Dakatta lamented that the north is particularly disadvantaged in the areas of quality education and economy, adding that the region accounts for 60% of Nigeria’s out-of-school children.

He observed that illiteracy and ignorance quickly fuel terrorism and other heinous vices, calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to declare ‘state of emergency’ on education in the region.
