2023: Kano Hospital, NGOs Celebrate World Family Doctors Day

AREWA AGENDA – Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Kano in partnership with the Teens Development Initiative (TDI), Al-Maghrib Foundation on Friday commemorated World Family Doctor Day themed ‘Heart of Healthcare’.

The day is observed annually on May 19 which aims to recognize the efforts of Family Doctors with the highlight of their role in community services and give explanations on family medicine.

In her remark, the Senior Registrar of the Family Medicine Department at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Dr. Fatima Idris emphasized the importance of recognizing the invaluable impact family physicians have on the healthcare system, which according to her reflected this year’s theme ‘Heart of Healthcare’.

Also, Dr.Halima Abdulkarim Halliru a family physician in the Department of Family Medicine told Arewa Agenda that, Family Doctors are typically the first point of contact for patients seeking medical care, as they provide continuous and comprehensive care to patients throughout their lives.

They build long-term relationships with patients, to understand their patients’ medical history, lifestyle, and social circumstances and offer personal care and support. Dr. Halima added

Fadhila Nuruddeen Muhammad, the Vice President of the Al-Maghrib Foundation said the purpose of the event is to honour and acknowledge the hardworking and devotion of all family physicians worldwide.

She further said her foundation wants to raise their morale and highlight key concerns related to their job in promoting health care for people around the world.

In his part, Bashir Nuhu one of the co-founders of TDI praised Family Doctors for their essential role in providing comprehensive and continuous health care to all patients.

The day was declared by the World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA) in 2010 and since then it has become an annual celebration aimed at recognizing the central role of family doctors in delivering personal, comprehensive, and continuous healthcare to patients.
