Stallion Times Collaborates With WSCIJ, Train Journalists on Disability Media Reporting in Kano
AREWA AGENDA – Kano based online news platform, Stallion Times in collaboration with Wole Soyinka Center For Investigative Journalism( (WSCIJ) on Wednesday engaged journalists on a one-day training on how to report People With Disability (PWD) related issues.
The training which was held at Ni’ima Guest Palace in the state was under the Collaborative Media Project (Collaborating For Media Independence and Government Accountability) with support from MacArthur Foundation.

While speaking, the Chief Editor of stallion Times Media Service, Mallam Isiyaku Ahmad noted that Stallion Times observed that people living with disabilities are greatly underreported in many media, hence the wake up seminar for journalists in Kano to gear up to the task of giving the PWDs the needed voice in the society via media reportage.
Isiyaku stated that there are however, many challenges in reporting for people with disability, adding that meaningful progress would not be achieved if journalists are lacking the requisite ethics in reporting PWDs’ related issues.
He then urged Journalists to focus on promoting success stories after reporting, investigation and step down training to other colleagues in the field.
On his part,the Head of Department Mass Communication Bayero University Kano, Dr Mainasara Yakubu Kurfi said,over 1 billion of the world population Represents 15 % people with disabilities, lamenting that they are at risks of poverty, low Education, lack health accessibility and unemployment.
He urged journalists to play the role of changing the negative narrative, by reporting on health, education, employment and access to physical endeavours without barriers in our society.
