Plateau AGILE Coordinator Bemoans Constraint Facing Adolescent Girls

AREWA AGENDA – The Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE), Plateau State Acting Project Coordinator, Mr Dachung Thomas Dangung bemoaned the constrain adolescent girls face in accessing and completing secondary education.

The acting coordinator who stated this at the AGILE Project presentation at the official launching of f AGILE project in Plateau State said some of the constraints include prevailing social and cultural norms, cost of secondary schools due to parental background and risk of sexual exploitation and abuse and other forms of gender-based violence in and around schools.

He explained that under the sub-component of the programme, Plateau State was allocated 55 new schools adding that under this agreement, 35 primary schools will be upgraded to Junior Secondary Schools while 20 Junior Secondary Schools will be upgraded to Senior Secondary Schools.

Dangung further disclosed that a total of 590 classrooms, 20 administrative blocks and 570 VIP toilets will be built adding that a supervision consultant has been mobilised to the site for screening while an evaluation report has been sent to the bank for clearance.

“This sub-component will provide school Improvement Grant ( SIGs) to import existing infrastructure in secondary schools, encourage an increase in girl’s enrollment and accommodate girl’s transition to secondary schools and ensure that the school environment is safe, accessible, inclusive and conducive for teaching and learning.”

He further disclosed that for Secondary Schools, there has been complete disbursement of a small grant of US£ 8,000 – 16,000 to 609 schools in Plateau for renovation and purchase of ICT materials among others.

On digital literacy and remote learning platform, the acting coordinator of AGILE pointed out that this will support the provision of basic digital training to secondary school students so that they can attain basic digital literacy and acquire skills on remote learning platforms.
