Kano 2023: Rurum set to upset other aspirants in APC Guber Race

Two years to 2023 general election in Kano, aspirants within the governing All Progressives Congress have started making moves to clinch the party’s much coveted gubernatorial ticket.

POLITICS DIGEST reports how 7 aspirants have started jostling for the seat through consultation with party members perceived as highly influential.

Others have gone as far as currying the blessings of the State Governor, his excellency, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

Though, some other aspirants are at loggerhead with the Governor, as leader of the party in the State, that has not detered them from making all necessary advances towards clinching the ticket.

Among the aspirants sighted by this paper sighted are: Sen. Barau I Jibrin, Deputy Governor Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, Inuwa Ibrahim Waya, Shaaban Ibrahim Sharada, Muhuyi Magaji Rimingado and Hon. Kabiru Alhassan Rurum.

In an analysis by this paper, Rurum was described as an aspirant that may surprise all the others jostling for the ticket especially looking at his track record in grassroots politics.

This is coming on the heels of agitations from the people of Kano South that they should be given chance to produce the next Kano Governor in 2023.

POLITICS DIGEST reports that the zone is yet to produce a governor since Sen. Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya who was governor of Kano between 1992- 1993.

“If the party will zone its ticket to Kano South, Rurum is the person with the highest chance”. A party chieftain who pleaded for anonymity said

It was further learnt that Rurum is enjoying the support and backing of renowned business moguls from his zone, the likes AA Rano of AA Rano Ltd and Aliyu Saidu Bebeji, the CEO of Aliko Oil.

Not only these moguls, Rurum has the backing of former House of Assembly Members in the State and some current members as well.

It was reliably gathered that Rurum may not enjoy the support of the first family especially the wife of the Governor, Dr. Hafsat Ganduje over his insistence that Ganduje must appear before the Kano State House of Assembly during the infamous dollar video saga.

The governor’s family initially wants a Gawuna/Garo ticket but later withdrew their support for a Gawuna to Murtala Sule Garo ticket. Garo is current Commissioner for local Government in the State.

“Let me tell you that if a free and fair primary election is to take place in APC, Rurum will win over all the candidates. All stakeholders of the party from his zone rallying their support for him

“Politicians within the party prefer him, they enjoyed his leadership as Speaker of Kano State House of Assembly, he knows the value of politicians like us. Why wouldn’t we support him? Politics is all about interest,” Bala Garba, a member of the All Progressives Congress from Kano Muncipal said.

Recall that the dollar video saga nearly cost him his ticket of the House of Representatives in Rano, Bunkure and Kibiya Constituency until stakeholders in the area put pressure on the governor to allow Rurum as the only candidate to defeat the PDP.

Kabiru Alhassan Rurum started his career as a Councillor in Lagos and was later elected member of the Kano State House of Assembly from Rano.

He served as Speaker of the State Assembly for 7 years even though he was once impeached to pave way for Yusuf Abdullahi Ata of Fagge Constituency as Speaker, Rurum was able to bounce back as the Speaker again until the expiration of the tenure of 8th Assembly in 2019.
