EXCLUSIVE: We Are Bereft Of Access To Western Education In Kano State – Sarkin Kutare

By Hannatu Suleiman Abba

AREWA AGENDA – The Sarkin Kutaren Kano, Mallam Isiyaku Muhammad has decried the dearth of access to western education by the people suffering from the deformity of leprosy in the state.

Muhammad made the cry during an exclusive interview with our correspondent last week in Kano state.

According to him, the people with such deformities have been marginalized in terms of acquisition of knowledge, stressing that education illuminates darkness and eradicates poverty at the same time.

He added that it is difficult to beat the trap of poverty in their midst without education, which can stretch to their generations yet unborn.

“I’m not perfect within my cluster colleagues, but one reason for choosing me to be their king was because of my Secondary Education before I was diagnosed as a leprosy patient.

“Although, I intend to further my Education at Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education Kano due to financial issues I have to bury my dream”, he said.

Muhammad bemoaned that all PWDs in the state have access to education, with special schools established to address their peculiar academic challenges and gainful employment after graduation but their category is left in the street to beg for their daily meals.

He also said that in his limited efforts, he had been able to organize evening lessons for the people suffering from leprosy in the state before seeking government support whereby Agency for Mass Education provides them with temporary space at Tudunwada Local Government and Six Thousand Naira only allowance for the tutor. An effort that was stopped by the construction of a road which resulted in the demolition of the place we were having classes.

“Assuming Government want to educate us, they will act in all the possible ways to see we are out of the street and end the leprosy stigma we are facing because access to education is the only way that can chase us away from begging and unite us with the remaining PWDs in dividends of democracy.” He concludes
