CITAD Empowers Northern Youths to Combat Corruption

The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) is actively addressing corruption in Nigeria by hosting a two-day training program in Kano State focused on accountability and anti-corruption for youths from several northern states.

Taking place at Ni’ima Guest Palace, the training aims to equip young participants with the skills needed to engage in the fight against corruption.

CITAD’s Executive Director, Engr. Y.Z. Ya’u, emphasized in his welcome speech that corruption—defined as the misuse of power for personal gain—destroys fairness and efficiency within society. He noted that the pervasive issue stems from a lack of accountability among public officials, which allows corrupt practices to flourish.

In a message delivered by Ali Sabo, CITAD’s Campaigns and Communications Officer, it was highlighted that corruption takes many forms, including bribery, embezzlement, nepotism, and fraud, all of which significantly impede economic and social progress.

Sabo underscored the importance of accountability, stating, “Without accountability, corruption will thrive. Citizens can foster accountability through civic engagement, social media, and demanding transparency.”

Over the two days, participants will learn about budget tracking, reporting on abandoned projects, and the fundamentals of accountability. “Our goal is for participants to return to their communities as change agents in the fight against corruption,” Sabo added.

Some of the topics discussed during the training include, Introduction to Accountability and Corruption,
Role of Young People in Promoting Accountability,
Whistleblowing and Protection for Whistleblowers,Social Media and Digital Tools for Anti-Corruption, Transparency in Public Procurement and Impact of Corruption on Development and
SM4A Outcomes Harvesting.
