Embracing Youth Technocrats: A Call for Progressive Leadership in Kano State

By Aliyu Samba

AREWA AGENDA – The recent gubernatorial election in Kano State, which saw Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf emerge as the victor, instilled hope for a new era of governance that would harness the skills and technical expertise of intellectual youth minds. However, the subsequent appointments made by the governor have raised concerns regarding the prevalence of gerontocracy rather than the inclusion of vibrant, educated, and solution-oriented youth technocrats. My article aims to shed light on the importance of empowering youth technocrats in high-profile positions and the potential consequences of neglecting their capabilities.

1. A Time for Change:
Governor Yusuf’s victory presented an opportune moment to tap into the wealth of knowledge possessed by youth technocrats. These individuals bring fresh perspectives, innovative thinking, and a deep understanding of contemporary issues and potential solutions. By incorporating their voices, Kano State could benefit from well-informed decision-making, strategic planning, and effective implementation of policies.

2. Technocrats vs. Gerontocrats:
While gerontocracy may have its merits, it is essential to strike a balance by actively including youth technocrats in key positions. Technocrats possess specialized expertise, often acquired through formal education and practical experience. They are well-versed in modern tools, technologies, and methodologies that can address the challenges faced by Kano State, thereby fostering progress and sustainable development.

3. Advantages of Youth Technocrats:
a) Fresh Perspectives: Youth technocrats bring a unique outlook on governance, unburdened by long-standing practices. They are more likely to challenge the status quo, question traditional methods, and propose innovative solutions to complex problems.
b) Technological Proficiency:  In the digital age, technological advancements play a pivotal role in economic growth and social development. Youth technocrats, well-versed in cutting-edge technologies, can harness their potential to transform various sectors and drive progress.
c) Representation and Engagement: Youth technocrats can better connect with and represent the aspirations and concerns of the younger population. Their inclusion in high-profile positions enhances youth engagement, fosters inclusivity, and inspires future generations to actively participate in governance and public affairs.

4. Implications of Neglecting Youth Technocrats:
a) Missed Opportunities: Neglecting youth technocrats deprives Kano State of harnessing their talents, skills, and knowledge. This could hinder progress and limit the potential for innovative and effective solutions.
b) Disconnect with the Youth: Restricting youth technocrats to Special Assistants (SA) or Senior Special Assistants (SSA) roles may marginalize their influence and limit their ability to drive substantive change. This can result in a disconnect between the government and the aspirations of the younger generation.
c) Brain Drain and Lost Talent: Neglecting the potential of youth technocrats may lead to a brain drain, as talented individuals seek opportunities elsewhere, depriving Kano State of its brightest minds.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s victory provided an occasion to reshape governance in Kano State by empowering youth technocrats. By embracing their skills, technical expertise, and contemporary orientation, the government can tap into the immense potential they possess. This government needs to move beyond gerontocracy and provide youth technocrats with high-profile positions that allow them to shape policies, implement strategic initiatives, and drive the state toward a brighter future.
