Strange, As  Biting Hardship Turns Kano Woman To ‘Mai Ruwa’

A widow in Kano state, who simply identified herself as Gambo, is not spared from the soaring economic turmoil as the situation had forced her to engage in cart pushing to sell water in the neighborhood.

According to report, Gambo’s situation is strange as female water vendor is alien in Northern Nigeria, especially Kano as it is a business that requires physical strength.

But in a video posted by Fauziyya D. Suleman, Executive Director of Creative Helping the Needy Foundation, on her Facebook page on Tuesday, Gambo was seen pushing the cart with water jerry cans on a street.

Fauziyya, who Senior Special Assistant to Kano state governor on Vulnerable and Needy, also captioned the video narrating the pathetic situation Gambo, a mother of six had found herself in.

Fauziyya said she was informed of Gambo by a good samaritan, whom she asked to record the helpless widow as she was pushing the cart in order to post on her Facebook page for public to support her.

In the video, Gambo, a resident of Rimin-Kebe in Ungoggo Local Government area, narrated that her husband died some years ago, leaving her with six orphans to cater for.

According to the widow, she had been evicted from a rented house at the area for failing to pay the annual rent.

She narrated that she is now squatting temporarily in a single room offered to her by a kind neighbor, who also struggles with life, adding that the situation had become unbearable for her as she could not take care of the six orphans, who are yet to grow up to support her.

The niqab-wearing widow narrated that the situation is what prompted her to hire a cart and sell water in the neighborhood in order to fend for her orphans.

“As I am speaking now, I have to push this cart to get the money to feed my children. I am a widow with six orphans and no one support me

“We don’t have shelter. Our landlord had since evicted us for failure to pay the annual rent. I have been in this ordeal since the death of my husband and I don’t have anybody to support me.

“I deemed it wise to look for a means of survival. That is why I have come with this idea to hire a cart and be selling water for my children,” Gambo, a middle-aged woman narrated.

She said none of the six children is attending to school as she could not afford their school fees and other expenses, calling on the general public to help her.

However, Fauziyya had already organized an appeal fund for the window as she had dropped her NGO’s account details for those willing to support her.

Fauziyya also appealed to the general public to support the woman to pay rent and take her children back to school.
