World Environmental Health Day: Hasken Matasa Guests Harp on Environmental Sanitation

AREWA AGENDA – Experts have said environment encompasses all elements, biotic (living) and abiotic (nonliving) factors of our surroundings that influence our well-being and keeping it clean frees us from the shackles of disease and disease-causing microorganisms and or their vectors.

They mentioned this on the 53rd episode of the radio programme ‘Hasken Matasa’ which featured the World Environmental Health Day where Barrister Nura Muhammad, founder Mu Farka Youth Development Initiative, and member Youth Society for Prevention of Infectious Diseases and Social Vices (YOSPIS), and Hajiya Aisha Haruna Kabuga, health counsellor spoke on the theme ‘World Environmental Health Day; a Clean Environment is a Healthy Environment.

According to Barrister Nura, environmental sanitation is a concept we all understand but pay little or no attention to.

“There is really no point in redefining environmental sanitation and how it affects our health because we all know that, what we lack is acting on the knowledge we have acquired on the subject.

“Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and youth should take it upon themselves to clean their environment because they have the strength, time and reasoning to do what is right by their neighbourhood,” Barrister Muhammad said.

Hajiya Haruna on her part opines that a healthy environment is a collective effort and all should not be left to the authorities alone.

“Keeping a clean environment for our own healthy wellbeing requires a collective effort where we have to do something before dragging the authority to it.”

The guest finally advised that people dump refuse properly, clear drainages, avoid littering the environment, plant shelterbelts and fill potholes the best way possible, to avoid breeding of disease-causing microorganisms and unexpected occurrences (accidents) on our highways.

Relevant authorities on their part were charged to make laws to regulate the indiscriminate building of houses that block waterways and empower youths with the equipment necessary for keeping a clean and healthy environment.

Hasken Matasa, which literally translates into “Light of the Youths”, is a weekly programme on topical youth-oriented issues organised by the Community Health and Research Initiative (CHR) and the Youth Society for Prevention of Infectious Diseases and Social Vices (YOSPIS), is sponsored by the Aminu Magashi Garba Foundation (AMG Foundation).
