Women Empowerment: AMG Foundation Grants 50 Artisans Cash Capital in Kano

AREWA AGENDA – The Aminu Magashi Garba (AMG) Foundation in partnership with Community Health and Research Initiative Nigeria (CHR) and Youth Society for the Prevention of Infectious Diseases and Social Vices (YOSPIS) have empowered not less than 50 women artisans with a cash capital of NGN5,000 each, totaling NGN250,000 to start up in their newly acquired skills in Kano.

The beneficiaries were drawn from about 150 women trained in various skills such as local perfume making, shoe making, bags and beads making, detergent making and liquid soaps by the Women’s Partners for Progress (WPP).

While presenting the cash to the beneficiaries, the program officer AMG foundation, Mal Jalo Sulaiman said that this is the first out of three-intended phase of the intervention in women empowerment by the foundation.

“It will be a continuous task as we target the remaining 100 women trained by the WPP and this is a deliberate effort by the Foundation because empowering the women will boost economic standards of the State and country by extension as we produce more skillful products in the market,” Mal Sulaiman said.

Reacting, the founder of WPP, Rukaiyya Adam Shuwa said the empowerment by Aminu Magashi Garba Foundation has given the women a strong leverage for empowerment and bridged the gap of inadequate capital.

“Capital has always been an issue even after acquiring basic skills like the one we have taught them this has always been a hindrance for the to start up and we are happy that such intervention came their way,” Ms Shuwa said.

In her remarks, the executive director of YOSPIS, Zainab Naseer Ahmad, added that empowering the youths, especially young women is what matters in this crucial time.

“Women are always the neediest as their task in the community plays a vital role even in economic viability, so empowering them cannot be ignored. AMG foundation has impacted their vision to be self-reliant in their newly acquired skills and this is highly commendable.”

A widow with six children, Fatima Mudi who was part of the beneficiaries said, seed capital was her greatest challenge after she was trained by WPP but with the empowerment from AMG Foundation, she will be able to start up and sustain all her children’s need.
