Despite the strong backing from the academic community, Prof. Camara condemned the smear campaign aimed at discrediting Professor Maikudi’s candidacy, which has been fueled by unfounded concerns regarding her age and gender. He labeled these criticisms as “anti-modern” and detrimental to the advancement of education in Nigeria.
“Detractors claim she is too young and suggest that a woman cannot hold such a prestigious office. This argument is not only intellectually dishonest but also steeped in hypocrisy,” he stated, calling for an end to such discriminatory narratives.
The Voice of African Universities has urged the Nigerian government to ensure a fair and transparent selection process, emphasizing the need to uphold values of excellence and meritocracy in academic leadership.
While acknowledging that the final decision lies with the University’s Governing Council, Prof. Camara called on the Nigerian Ministry of Education and other stakeholders to guarantee that due process is observed.
As the call for Professor Maikudi’s appointment gains momentum, supporters are hopeful that her leadership could mark a transformative era for the University of Abuja and the broader educational landscape in Nigeria.
The association remains committed to backing her candidacy, advocating for a future where qualifications and vision triumph over outdated stereotypes.
