UNICEF Reports Alarming Poverty Rates Among Children in Kebbi State

The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) has revealed that Kebbi State has the highest rate of multidimensionally poor children in Nigeria, with a staggering 88% of its youth affected.

This statistic was highlighted by Malam Isa Ibrahim, Social Policy Specialist at UNICEF Sokoto, during a recent capacity-building workshop for civil society organizations and media focused on Public Financial Management and child-friendly budgeting.

Ibrahim cited data from the National Bureau of Statistics 2023, indicating that eight out of ten children in Kebbi suffer from multidimensional poverty, stemming from inadequate access to education, healthcare, nutrition, and clean water.

In response to these challenges, Hajiya Aishatu Usman, the Acting Head of the Kebbi State Civil Service, emphasized the government’s commitment to improving children’s welfare through the implementation of social protection policies, a Food and Nutrition policy, and the Child Rights Act.

She expressed optimism that collaboration between the government and civil society organizations would enhance budget allocations to critical sectors, thereby improving conditions for children in the state.

The two-day workshop brought together government officials, representatives from NGOs, and members of the media from Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara states to address these pressing issues.
