UNICEF, Bafarawa Foundation Applaud Governor Yusuf for Reuniting, Rehabilitating 76 Freed Minors
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the Bafarawa Foundation have lauded Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his efforts in rehabilitating and reuniting 76 teenagers with their families after their ordeal in detention.
The commendations were made during the official handover ceremony on Thursday, two weeks after the teenagers underwent medical evaluation and reformation at Muhammadu Buhari Specialists Hospital, Kano.
According to a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, UNICEF Chief of Field Office Michael Banda praised the governor’s swift action in addressing the welfare of the children. Banda highlighted the governor’s child-centered policies, including the provision of counseling sessions, medical care, and the successful tracing and verification of the children’s families.

UNICEF pledged to work with the state Ministry of Women Affairs, Children, and Disabled Persons to provide the teenagers with access to education, livelihood skills, and justice services. Banda also urged the completion of Community Rehabilitation and Diversion Centres at the hospital to ensure the sustainability of child-friendly governance.
Alhaji Abdurrahman Baffa Yola, representing the Bafarawa Foundation, commended the state government’s timely intervention and announced ₦50,000 cash support for each teenager to address their immediate needs. He also assured the government of the foundation’s commitment to continued collaboration to support the teenagers.
Barrister Hamza Nuhu Dantani, a member of the legal team, urged parents to closely monitor their children, emphasizing the importance of lawful and peaceful protests conducted responsibly.
The event underscored a united effort by the government, international organizations, and local stakeholders to prioritize the well-being and future of Kano’s youth.
