We need a sign language interpreter during ANC in Kano hospital.

AREWA AGENDA – A mother of two laments how difficult it has been for the hearing impaired clusters during pregnancy for women in kano state hospitals during Anti-Natal care.
She said many of the hearing impaired pregnant women stop visiting hospital due to communication Barriers that occur between the nurse or doctors which affect their lives and the baby.
However, the only way we try to communicate effectively in the hospital during ANC is by visiting the hospital with one of our family members who will interpret for us This has been a way for many of us to shun hospital for Ante-Natal care during pregnancy and demand on the traditional methods.

She added that during my last ANC at a hospital in Kano state, I came across a doctor who couldn’t understand me and none of my family members are there with me, I have to communicate with him in writing format but my worries is what happens to those who are not Educated?
However This happen to a friend of mine who lost her Life as the doctor said, she didn’t visit the hospital for an antenatal check-up and due to that, she has blood deficiency which lead to the loss of her life and baby.
The hearing impaired clusters face a lot of challenges from some of the medical staff in the hospital and communication Barriers play a vital role.
The mother urges the Government and other relevant stakeholders to do the needful step in saving the lives of people living with Disabilities especially the hearing impaired clusters this will enable them to have health accessibility in the State.
