“Road Construction Vital for Economic Development,” Says Experts on Hasken Matasa

AREWA AGENDA – Experts have called on political actors to draw out proper plans and execution strategies for road construction while concurrently calling on the people to tread the board for its maintenance after successful completion..

Speaking on the topic, Road Construction and Maintenance; What Political Actors Should Know and How to Act, Engr. Muftahu Aliyu Hassan, Member Nigerian Society of Engineers (MNSE), expressed the need to take road construction and maintenance seriously on the account of obvious reasons it plays in the economy of any country.

He spoke on the 59th episode of the radio programme Hasken Matasa alongside Engineer Ahmad Rufa’i.

“Road plays major roles ranging from easy transportation, conveying of raw materials to industries, connecting farmer to the market, to providing aesthetic values.

“For this to be achieved, government officials should before awarding any contract get a specialist for soil analysis and other necessary tests to ascertain the integrity of the proposed site, and involve stakeholders; especially when proposing to construct a frontage road,” Engr. Muftahu admonished.

Engr. Ahmad Rufa’i on his part faulted citizens for the poor state of our road. He stated that if people could fathom their roles in road maintenance, they would not be in the sorry states they are in today.

According to him, “If only we could understand our roles in road maintenance, they would not be as dilapidated as they are, and the government officials and contractors would be exonerated from some of the faults attributed to them as regards road construction and maintenance.

“Commercial drivers should shun overloading, trucks and other heavy vehicles should only ply on roads meant for them, littering of the road with both biodegradable and non-biodegradable materials which could be injurious to roads ought to avoided,” the engineer cautioned.

Hasken Matasa, which literally translates into “Light of the Youths”, is a weekly programme on topical youth-oriented issues organised by the Community Health and Research Initiative (CHR) and the Youth Society for Prevention of Infectious Diseases and Social Vices (YOSPIS), and sponsored by the Aminu Magashi Garba Foundation (AMG Foundation).
