Meet Fulani Herdsman Who Engaged in Climate Action

AREWA AGENDA – A young Fulani herdsman has contributed his quota in climate action when he joined Panacea Foundation in a tree in its tree-planting campaign drive at Tudun Yola, in Kabuga area of Kano State.

The young man who was in company of his cows came across members of the foundation planting the seedlings when he expressed interest to partake in the exercise.

“Initially, when I spotted him and his herds, I told my colleagues that I am happy we are covering the seedlings with basket otherwise the cattle will just eat them up, that was when he approached us and expressed his fascination with what we were doing I now asked if he knew what it was, he said yes, then I admonished him to keep his cows away from the seedlings and he told us they don’t eat the seedling, he then volunteered to join us and also took photos with us. It’s exciting to see a herdsman who are mostly seen as remote people, not only showing good understanding of the need for tree-planting, this to me is a huge success.” Dr. Dahir M Hashim of Panacea Foundation narrated.

Tree-planting is the process of transplanting tree seedlings, generally for forestry, land reclamation or landscaping purpose especially in relation to climate change.

Speaking further on the tree-planting campaign, Dr. Dahir admits that it is quite tasking especially since such movement requires community to embrace the initiative with their resources and energy especially in sourcing protective materials for the seedlings like baskets.

Dr. Dahir revealed that graveyards are currently eroded and some of them have not more than foure trees in them.

“We spotted about three grave yards like that in Kurna Asabe but we need baskets, we need resources because all we usually get from government is the seedlings but every other thing we take care of by ourselves.” He narrated
