Market Opens in Kano Despite Lockdown

AREWA AGENDA – A mini market along Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital in Kano has continued to operate despite the lockdown imposed on the state government to curb the alarming rate of COVID-19 pandemic in the State.

The market popularly called Kasuwar Kasan Gada (under the bridge market) in the popular Rimi market, sales groceries and other assorted food items.

AREWA AGENDA observed that the market bustling with buyers and sellers trooping in their numbers to carry out transactions.

A trader, Abu Dalib said some of the goods are perishable, hence the need to sell them before they perish.

Another trader who simply identified himself as Alhaji Orabe said, “We can never survive without trading, this is the only means we use to feed ourselves.

Buyers and sellers continued to transact business.

In his third National Broadcast on COVID-19, Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has imposed a two weeks lockdown on the state with immediate effect.

In the broadcast on Tuesday, the President said, “The total lockdown recently announced by the State Government shall be enforced for the full duration. The Federal Government shall deploy all necessary human, material and technical resources to support the State in controlling and containing the pandemic.”

As at Tuesday night, Kano state has an official record of 115 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with two deaths at the time of this report.
