Malnutrition: NGO Raises Alarm Over Increasing Deaths in Kano
The Civil Society Scaling-up Nutrition in Nigeria (CS-SUNN), an NGO has decried the increasing rate of dying children in Kano state as a result of malnutrition cases amongst children less than five years.
The National Project Manager of the SC-SUNN Mr Okoronkwo Sunday lamented this at a one-day sensitization on high-level advocacy and policy dialogue on the nutrition situation on Thursday in Kano State which was on “Partnership for Improving Nigeria Nutrition Systems (PINNS)’’.
Mr Sunday said that the dialogue was aimed at establishing media roles and responsibilities for increased visibility of PINNS/nutrition issues in Kano and ensure the approval and implementation of all policy and strategies design to reduce malnutrition.
He told the participants and other stakeholders that malnutrition remains the key contributor to infant and maternal mortality and morbidity, which in turn affects the economic development of any nation

Solacebase reports that some of the causes of Malnutrition discussed during the dialogue include inadequate food intake, diseases, inadequate healthcare, an unhygienic environment, lack of funds and poor health facilities.
On her part, the Coordinator of CS-SUNN Kano State, Hajiya Zainab Aliyu Musa, appealed to the state government, to increase the funds on the advocacy of Malnutrition in Kano and ensure that the funds and policy are implemented.
In a remark, Kano State Commissioner of Budget and planning, Alhaji Nura Muhammad Dan Kade, said the state has earmarked N300m from the 2021 budget to take preventive measures for combating malnutrition such as exclusive breastfeeding and optimal Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) practices.
He said bout 3000 infant and children under the age of 5 years would benefit from this exercise.
Other stakeholders in attendance, for dialogue, include Kano State Commissioner for Health Dr Aminu Ibrahim Tsanyawa, represented by his Permanent Secretary, wife of Kano State governor, Prof Hafsat Ganduje represented by Commissioner for Higher Education, Dr Mariya Bunkure, health practitioners and journalists among others.
