The Lukarawa : Time for Decisive Action in Northern Nigeria
By Sani Danaudi Mohammed
Arewa, Northern Nigeria, boasts a rich history of peace and accommodation, contributing significantly to Nigeria’s development. The region’s storied past is marked by its pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s economic and political landscape, particularly during the First Republic. Visionary leaders like Sardauna left an indelible legacy.
The North’s accommodating nature has historically fostered unity among diverse ethnic groups. However, this harmony has been disrupted by bad governance and leadership. Corruption and ineptitude have plagued the region, exacerbating poverty and insecurity. The consequences of these failures are stark, with widespread suffering.
The North’s economic mainstay, agriculture, has been neglected. Once the backbone of Nigeria’s economy, agriculture’s potential to generate revenue and contribute to GDP remains untapped. Revitalizing agriculture is crucial to the region’s resurgence, providing employment and stimulating growth.
Insecurity is a pressing concern, with terrorist groups like Boko Haram and bandits creating an environment of fear. Disrupting economic and social activities, insecurity has become a major obstacle to development in Northern Nigeria. Addressing this challenge requires a multifaceted approach, including military action and community engagement.
Economic stagnation hinders the North’s growth due to inadequate infrastructure and limited access to basic services. This results in widespread poverty, unemployment, and disillusionment. Investing in infrastructure and essential services like healthcare and education is vital to revitalizing the regional economy. Key sectors like agriculture, mining, and manufacturing also require investment to create jobs.
Social fragmentation, fueled by violence and insecurity, erodes trust among communities, intensifying ethnic and religious tensions. Rebuilding trust requires inclusive dialogue, education, and community initiatives promoting interfaith understanding and cultural exchange. Community-based programs focusing on youth empowerment and women’s development can bridge the divide. Addressing conflict root causes like resource competition is crucial.
To overcome its challenges, the North needs visionary leaders prioritizing unity, development, and security. Strategic investments in education, healthcare, and infrastructure are crucial. Addressing insecurity’s root causes, including poverty, unemployment, and inequality, is vital. This holistic approach will foster economic growth, social cohesion, and lasting peace in the region.
