AREWA AGENDA – Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Abuja Chapter, Hauwa Shekarau has said that communal lifestyle is a contributing factor to the rising spate of sexual abuse.

She said that as long as sections of the society continue to see sexual harassment as a normal thing, it will remain for as long as it has been with us.

Shekarau Stated this during a Network of Reproductive Health Journalists Nigeria, NRHJN, Webinar Series 1 with Stakeholders.

This is as she commended the National Assembly for passing the sexual harassment bill which abolished mutual consent as a defence in sexual harassment cases in Tartiary Educational Institutions.

According to her, the move is a step in the right direction because sexual harassment has gone beyond mere imaginations in Nigerian Universities and Tartiary Institutes.

She added that before now, sexual harassment was a difficult thing to proof but digital devices and Social Media Platforms have made it easier and the bill will make prosections much expedient.

The bill which was sponsored by the Deputy Senate President, Movie Omo Agege has 26 sections and relates only tertiary Institutions in Nigeria.

Recall that last year, there was outrage when the BBC Africa Eye released a year-long investigation documenting the sexual harassment behaviour of some lecturers at the University of Lagos and the University of Ghana.

Universities rules forbid such a relationship between students and lecturers.
