How Katsina Woman Set Herself Ablaze After Divorce
In a tragic incident, a 40-year-old woman from Garin Mallam village in Jigawa’s Guri Local Government Area set herself ablaze after being divorced by her husband.
According to DSP Lawan Shiisu, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, the woman doused herself in petrol before igniting the fire. The incident was confirmed by Shiisu in a statement released on Friday in Dutse.
He said, “On Thursday, at about 0740 hours, the command received heartbreaking and pitiful news of an incident from Guri, which indicated that a 40-year-old woman at Garin Mallam village poured petrol on her body, set herself ablaze, and got burnt beyond recognition.

The incident occurred on the outskirts of Garin Mallam village, where the woman reportedly took her own life by setting herself on fire.
The statement reads, “Following this report, a squad of officers from the Guri Divisional Police Headquarters raced to the scene and verified the incident.
“The officers took the charred body to the hospital and later released the corpse to the family for burial.”
According to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), a preliminary investigation suggests that the deceased had been struggling with depression in the months following her divorce.
The PPRO also relayed a message from the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ahmadu Abdullahi, urging individuals to seek guidance from Almighty Allah in times of crisis, rather than resorting to extreme measures.
Abdullahi also advised people to always seek advice and counselling from their elders on complex issues to avoid such unfortunate incidents.
