Kano: YOSPIS supports Radio Awareness Programs on Cancer
AREWA AGENDA – The Executive Director of Youth Society for the Prevention of Infectious Diseases and Social Vices (YOSPIS) Zainab Nasser Ahmad said as the fastest growing youth NGO in Kano and neighbouring states has been able to sensitise and create awareness to the public on cancer through various radio programmes.
Zainab disclosed the achievement on Friday when serving as a panellist in a gathering of International Cancer Week in Abuja organized by the Nigerian Cancer Society themed: Close The Gap
Miss Zainab who enlightened the public on the topic “Evaluating the Effects of Cancer Awareness Programs on the Knowledge and Willingness to Uptake Cancer Screening Among Kano State” added that Nigeria’s population is dominated by the youth and YOSPIS as a youth platform in Nigeria, particularly in Kano State has been creating Awareness to the public on breast, cervical, prostate cancer and other related cancer diseases with support from Aminu Magashi Garba Foundation in an establishing live weekly Radio Programs named “HASKEN MATASA”, at Express Radio 90.3 FM with a reach of over 2 million listeners within and outside the State.
Accordingly, YOSPIS dedicated 15 episodes out of its 52 episodes of weekly live Radio Programs so far

Recall that YOSPIS members participated in the largest breast cancer Awareness walk in October 2022, organized by Societal Healthcare Organisation (SHO) which covered more than 10 thousand youths match in the Kano State, whereby YOSPIS later invited cancer survivals, organisers and participants to share information to the public in our Radio Programs.
YOSPIS Urged the Government to emphasize the role of youths in advocacy for cancer. As Cancer services must be prioritised to cover youths and adolescents which includes covering their annual health insurance premium.
“All our presidential and gubernatorial candidates should engage youths vigorously to understand their needs and to be captured in their development agenda,” she said.
In his remarks, the President of the Nigerian Cancer Society Dr Alhassan Adamu Umar said, the rate of cancer reported cases in the country is alarming and this is a threat to the health system in general.
As cancer advocators, the government are trying but should emphasize more on Financing the cancer budget and reaching out to grassroots communities across the federation.
The Nigerian Cancer Society appreciated the tremendous support by African Health Budget Network Co-ordinator Dr Aminu Magashi Garba for always sponsoring various activities in the country, and other partners both local and international organizations.
The occasion was graced by medical practitioners, academicians, politicians, researchers, students unions, NGOs, media among others.
