How Kano Street Beggars Suffered Starvation During #EndBadGovernance Protests
Street beggars in Kano have called on the organizers of the ongoing nationwide protests to consider halting the demonstrations in the interest of humanity.
Baba Haliru, a 70-year-old beggar from Rigiyar Zaki, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the protests have made survival increasingly difficult for those who depend on daily earnings to sustain their families.
“Many of us rely on what we earn each day to feed our families,” Haliru explained. “But these protests have prevented us from going out to earn a living.”
He lamented, “In our household of 14, we’ve had nothing to eat for two out of the last four days, except for water.”

“For the sake of God, we plead with those leading the protests to seek a resolution with the government to bring an end to this situation,” Haliru appealed.
Echoing his sentiments, other beggars also urged an end to the protests and the lifting of the curfew.
Malama Mario Kabiru, from Hotoro quarters, said, “We’ve run out of food and are unable to go out to buy more. We have no money, and the situation is becoming unbearable.”
Malam Isa Musa from Dorayi quarters also called on the government to implement measures to support elderly individuals without any means of assistance.
“We are begging because we have no one to help us,” Musa said. “Since the curfew was imposed, my family and I haven’t eaten anything in three days. We can’t continue like this—please, let the protests come to an end.”
