Kano state police command has arrested eight suspect for making speech that has the consequences of threatening some innocent non indigents in the state.
The new of the arrest was made known by the state command PPRO,SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa in a press statement made available to pressmen on Sunday.
The statement reads:
Kano State Police Command is in receipt of reoccurring incidences of hate speeches with life-threatening consequences being targeted at innocent passersby strangers in some parts of Kano State. These reports are becoming more rampant especially from 1st and 3rd September 2023. This police command is therefore calling on all residents to ignore them and consider them as mere unfounded rumours being circulated such as: Some Witches have stormed Kano Metropolis and are moving from one house to another sucking the blood of innocent people”. This allegation has been investigated by the police and is found to be an unsubstantiated rumour, fabricated with the sole aim of promoting haters of strangers in Kano and by extension inciting public disturbance, creating fear, chaos, and disrupting the peace being enjoyed in the State.

Furthermore, the police command is sternly warning members of the public to stay clear as investigations have been instituted to detect some persons behind mongering this rumour that have so far led to the attacks on innocent citizens at Kwana Hudu Quarters, Zango Quarters and Hotoro Quarters all within Kano Metropolis. Below are the synopsis of some of the incidents:
(i) AT KWANA HUDU QUARTERS: – On 3rd September, 2023 at about 1200hrs (12pm), a distress call was received from a good Samaritan that, “Three teenage girls were trapped in a house at Danfili, Kwana Hudu Quarters, Nassarawa LGA Kano State and are about to be lynched on mere suspicion for Witchcraft. It was on the receipt of such report that the Commissioner of Police directed the immediate deployment of Police Detectives to rescue the victims and arrest the hatred promoters. While the three teenage girls were rescued and rushed to Gwagwarwa Hospital, treated and discharged, Preliminary investigation was conducted and it was revealed that the housewife operates a commercial phone charging point. They entered the house with the intent to charge their phones, and when one of them requested to use a toilet in the house, the housewife raised an alarm, calling them witches and attracted nearby people who engaged in beating them including the husband who locked them in a room. The husband and the wife were subsequently arrested and currently undergoing investigation.
(ii) IN ZANGO QUARTERS: – On 2nd September 2023 at about 1630hrs (04:30pm), two separate distress calls were received that two women were about to be lynched at Layin Maiunguwa, Rimin Kebbe Quarters, Ungogo LGA, on suspicion of Witchcraft. On receipt of the report, a team of detectives were immediately mobilized to the scene. They were rescued and rushed to Hospital, where they were treated and discharged. On preliminary investigation, eyewitnesses revealed that they were new faces in the area and hence the reason for the suspicion. The investigation is in progress.
(iii) IN HOTORO QUARTERS: – Similarly, On 3rd September 2023 at about 0930hrs (09:30am) two separate reports were received that two women were about to be lynched, one at Kawon Kudu Quarters Kano and the other at Hotoron Arewa Quarters Kano all in Kano Metropolis on suspicion of being witches. A team of Police detectives were immediately mobilized to the scene, and rescue the victims from the aggressive mob, and one was alleged to have been beaten. Six suspects were arrested, and a pointed iron rod was recovered. Preliminary investigation revealed that they were new faces in the area which resulted in the false accusation of Witchcraft against them. A discreet investigation has commenced.

From the forgoing, the promoters of this mongering rumour are warned to desist henceforth as the Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Usaini Gumel, FIPMA, psc is cautioning residents against jungle justice or taking laws into their own hands as whoever is arrested will be arrested and made to face the full wrath of the law.
