Kano commissioner resigns, says govt has derailed

A Kano State Commissioner, Yusuf Kofarmata, has resigned his appointment as a member of the State Executive Council, citing what he described as a deviation from the political ideology that brought the current administration to power.

Kofarmata announced his resignation in a statement on Sunday, saying the decision was taken in good faith and guided by conscience.

“I hereby resign my appointment as commissioner and member of the Kano State Executive Council. I cannot continue to work under a government that has derailed from the ideology that brought it to power,” he said.

The former commissioner, who served in the Ministry of Tertiary Education as well as the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, thanked the leadership of the New Nigeria People’s Party and key political figures for the opportunity to serve.

He specifically thanked the NNPP national leader, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and supporters of the Kwankwasiyya movement for their support during his tenure.

“I remain grateful to our national leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the people who stood with us throughout the journey,” he said.

Kofarmata reaffirmed his loyalty to the NNPP and the Kwankwasiyya movement, declaring, “Long live NNPP, long live the Kwankwasiyya movement.”

His resignation comes amid heightened political tension in Kano State following Yusuf’s recent exit from the NNPP, which has triggered a wave of resignations and political realignments among appointees and party officials.

In recent days, several aides and stakeholders aligned with the Kwankwasiyya movement have either resigned or distanced themselves from the state government, citing ideological differences and uncertainty over the administration’s political direction.

Kofarmata’s exit further underscores growing internal strain within Kano’s political landscape as alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections continue to evolve.
