Gender violence: Referral centres few, justice for victims difficult–CODE
AREWA AGENDA – Though, cases of gender-based violence seem to be on the rise in the country, there are few referral centres, which are established and fully-funded by government, says Connected Development (CODE).
CODE, a non-government organization (NGO), whose mission is to improve access to information and empower local communities in Africa, also lamented the difficulty victims of gender-based violence experience, while seeking justice in courts against their abusers.
Senior Programs Manager for the NGO, Lucy James Abagi, however has advocated massive support for victims to give them a sense of belonging.

She spoke, in Abuja, at a three-day workshop tagged, “Ending Gender-Based Violence in Nigeria.” The workshop, powered by CODE, is supported by the UN-Spotlight Initiative.
According to Lucy Abagi, CODE is already partnering with key stakeholders and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), with a view to amplify their cases and also attract legal support for ‘hapless’ victims of gender-based violence.
She said: “Getting justice for rape victims doesn’t seem achievable, because a lot of evidences will be required in courts.
“For now, we are still amplifying, advocating, and also mobilizing citizens to take necessary action, to ensure that they protect themselves from abuse or any form of domestic battering.”
Key stakeholders and delegates across the 36 States are participating in the workshop holding at Corinthia Villa Hotels in Garki, Abuja.
