Today, November 20, marks the birthday of a renowned Nigerian leader, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, born in 1957 to a Christian Ijaw family in Otuoke, Bayelsa State.¹ His father was a canoe maker, and his mother a retired farmer. Jonathan’s educational background includes a bachelor’s degree in zoology, a master’s in hydrobiology and fisheries biology, and a doctorate in zoology from the University of Port Harcourt.
Before becoming Nigeria’s President, Jonathan served as vice president from 2007 to 2010 under Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and as governor of Bayelsa State from 2005 to 2007. He initially entered politics in 1998, working as an education inspector, lecturer, and environmental-protection officer. Jonathan’s political career began with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the late 1990s, alongside Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, the first civilian governor of Bayelsa State.
His dedication earned him recognition as Nigeria’s most hardworking deputy governor.
