Foundation calls FG to ban Genetical Modified Organism technology in Agriculture

AREWA AGENDA – Health of Mother Earth foundation (HOMEF) calls the attention of Federal Government on the harmful effect of GMO to Nigeria’s Agriculture and asked for it’s banning.

The call was made known when Farmers were sensitized on the effect of genetical modified organisms products by the foundation at Madobi local government area in Kano state.

The sensitization which focus on Interaction with farmers to create awareness on how to produce healthy food and shun the uses of Genetic Modified Organism (GMO) products, which are very harmful to the health, and agricultural practices in the country.

The program manager of Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF) Miss Joyce Ebebeinw, said “most of the GMO products are imported to Nigeria from foreign countries and are very harmful which serves as a way of destroying our soils due to it’s chemicals.

“Mostly our farmers rely on the product of GMO than more of our local product due to it fast germination and productivity, many countries has ban the importation of GMO products. She reiterated

However, Miss Ebebeinw lament that, if truly the government want our economy to be standard as it was years ago, the ban of GMO product will contribute and make our agricultural economy boost and produce healthy food to the country.

On their part, farmers at Madobi local government expressed their gratitude to HOMEF for sensitizing them with an immense knowledge. A participant, Malam Lawan Aminu Kwankwaso said the interactive session will enhance his way of farming by avoiding the usage of GMO Product
“ofcourse we used GMO product often in our farm without realizing it harmfulness, but as I am fully sensitized today by it’s harm to our health I will make sure I stop using such kind of products”

Also a female rice farmer named Malama Hajara Usman said “I find it very difficult to differentiate between the use of GMO products and the local products but with the help of this sensitization given by HOMEF, I will start producing food that will be healthy to my Country.

Miss Joyce Ebebeinw advise the farmers to share their views with the government and any Non governmental organizations that are into Agricultural practices for it will make the country regain its pride to feed the nation and the world at large.
