Desertification: Kebbi Govt Plants  Trees Across 21 LGAs

Kebbi State government plans to plant 100,000 trees across the 21 local government areas to curb desert encroachment.

The commissioner for environmental and mineral resources, Musa Muhammad Tungulawa, disclosed the plans yesterday to journalists during an interview in his office at Birnin Kebbi.

He said the exercise had already begun on the major streets and highways in Birnin Kebbi metropolis as well as at the renovated state secretariat.

The commissioner also said five hectares of land were allocated in each of the four emirates councils in the state for the planting of date trees to boost the economy.

“We have started in Gwandu and Yauri and later on to Zuru and Argungu emirates,” Tungulawa said.

The commissioner added that his ministry has procured enough variety of seedlings after nursing them, which will be provided to households and offices for planting across the state.

He emphasised that if the trees were given adequate nursing by the beneficiaries the environment would have a good shelter where people could live comfortably.

He called on the people to give the project maximum support towards achieving conducive environment.
