AREWA AGENDA – Teachers in some selected public secondary schools across the Kano state have been urged to join anti-corruption clubs in their schools in order to fight corruption now posing as a threat to the advancement of the nation.
The Executive Director of Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD), Engr. Y.Z Ya’u made the call during one-day anti-corruption mentors workshop for public secondary schools in Kano.
Engr. Y.Z, who was represented by the Anti-Corruption project officer, Kamilu Isah Ahmed, said the establishment of the clubs in public schools was initiated because of the recognition of the important role youths could play in the war against endemic corruption in the country.
He explained that the workshop was conceived based on the knowledge that corruption is a huge problem to Nigeria.
Mr. Ahmed, said the workshop was a capacity building programme for secondary schools teachers in Kano.
“The programme was part of the CITAD’s Anti-Corruption and Accountability Project with support from Macarthur Foundation aimed at tackling corruption in Nigeria and help in entrenching democracy.”
He added that despite the plethora of anti – corruption agencies fighting corruption in Nigeria, corruption has remained widespread and pervasive, partly because the norms and behaviour of citizens have remained unchanged.
Kamilu Isah further noted that fighting corruption should be holistic and at all levels of governance and once corruption was reduced to the barest minimum, Nigeria would begin to witness exponential development.
