CHRICED Urges Nigerians to Vote for Worthy Candidates
AREWA AGENDA – Resource Center for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED) has called on Nigerians, particularly the electorates to be cautious and vote for credible candidates, regardless of their political party affiliations in the forthcoming 2023 general elections. This call is based on its findings that majority of the challenges faced by the citizens can be traced to the wrong choices of representatives in government who come with campaign promises that are hardly fulfilled.
CHRICED’s Assistant Contact and Community Mobilization Officer, Mallam Sabi’u Habibu Babawa, made this call during CHRICED’S weekly Radio Awareness Program on Arewa Radio 93.1 Kano. The radio program is part of CHRICED’s project titled “Promotion of Community Driven Anti-Corruption Initiatives in Kano, Nigeria” aimed at facilitating self-organization and acquisition of knowledge and skills required by constituents to influence the use of public funds to enhance openness, transparency and accountability in the legislative constituency project delivery process in Kano State.

Constituency projects are one of government programs expected to help spread development and give citizens a sense of belonging by benefitting from public resources. But in reality, the reverse has been the case as these projects have less impacts on the lives of the people at the grassroots. This is why CHRICED calls on citizens to actively get involved in governance process because their constant lamentations, accusations and recriminations cannot end bad governance. Active citizen participation with appropriate skills and capacity to use the tools of democratic engagement will go a long way to bring about positive changes in the government system and the lives of the people.
CHRICED’s Assistant Program Officer/MEL, Mallam Muhammad Yusuf Musa, stated that the project has recorded some successes as CHRICED enlightenment workshops held in 36 out of the 44 Local Government Areas of the state in the last 2 years have awakened citizens in some of the LGAs.
“There is increased flow of information and dialogue between the constituents and their representatives, constituents now come together to discuss issues that affect them, some were able to make presentations for the first time before the Kano State House of Assembly during the budget public hearing in 2021 while more are mobilizing themselves to make their presentations this year. Some now continuously follow up to see that the promises made by their representatives are fulfilled,” he said.
CHRICED is supporting Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-corruption Commission Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission ICPC and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC in Kano State to ensure that the fight against corruption is rooted in the grassroots where the citizens bear the brunt of the effects of corrupt practices by those in governance.
CHRICED supported by MacArthur Foundation appreciates all stakeholders who have contributed to the level of successes being recorded by the ongoing project.
