CHRICED Launches Initiative to Combat Maternal and Child Mortality in Kano State

The Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED) has officially launched a new project aimed at tackling the high rates of maternal and child mortality in Kano State. The initiative was unveiled during an inaugural press briefing led by Executive Director Comrade Dr. Ibrahim Zikirullahi.

Highlighting the urgent need for action, Dr. Zikirullahi emphasized that Kano State currently faces a staggering maternal mortality rate of 1,025 deaths per 100,000 live births. This alarming statistic underscores the necessity for community engagement and strategic collaboration among stakeholders involved in maternal and child healthcare.

“The project is designed to halt the rising rates of maternal and child mortality through targeted actions and community participation,” Dr. Zikirullahi stated. He urged all stakeholders to work together in advocating for the thorough implementation of the Kano State Free Maternal and Child Healthcare Law.

Kano State is part of a broader crisis in Nigeria, which accounts for 10% of global deaths related to pregnancy and childbirth, with a national rate of 576 deaths per 100,000 live births. CHRICED identified critical challenges, including limited access to healthcare services and a lack of accountability, as significant barriers to effective healthcare delivery.

The three-year project will focus on ensuring the successful execution of the Kano State Free Maternal Newborn and Child Healthcare (FMNCH) Law, 2023. Dr. Zikirullahi stated that the initiative aims to promote social accountability and transparency in budget allocations for maternal and child healthcare, educate the public about their rights, and mobilize community members for effective advocacy.

He also expressed gratitude to MISEREOR-KZE, a German organization supporting the project, for its commitment to improving the welfare of women and children in Nigeria. Mrs. Julia Krojer, a representative of MISEREOR-KZE, reiterated her organization’s dedication to addressing maternal and child mortality across Africa and commended CHRICED for its proactive efforts in Kano.

The launch of this project represents a critical step towards reducing avoidable deaths and improving healthcare outcomes for mothers and children in the region.
