CHRICED Condemns Rising Fuel Prices as Nigerians Face Increased Hardship
The Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED) has issued a strong condemnation of the recent and continuous rise in petrol prices across Nigeria, calling it a significant source of suffering for the population.
The latest increase in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) comes as many families are already grappling with the impacts of escalating transportation costs and the rising prices of essential goods and services.
In a statement, CHRICED criticized President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, which they argue prioritize the interests of international financial institutions like the World Bank and IMF over the welfare of Nigerians. The organization highlighted that these policies have led to a sharp decline in purchasing power, exacerbating the struggles of countless families as they face stagnant wages amid soaring living costs.
CHRICED also pointed out the failure of the All Progressives Congress (APC) government to provide a coherent plan for economic recovery, leaving citizens feeling abandoned. The organization emphasized the growing frustration and despair among Nigerians, who are increasingly forced to make difficult choices between essential needs such as food, healthcare, and education.

Highlighting the staggering 430 percent increase in petrol prices since Tinubu’s administration began in May 2023, CHRICED raised concerns about the management of Nigeria’s oil resources. Despite significant investments aimed at rehabilitating state-owned refineries, none have produced any oil, raising questions about the effectiveness of government spending in the sector. The comparison to the privately-owned Dangote Refinery, which was completed at a fraction of the cost and time, further underscored the inefficiencies in the public sector.
CHRICED urged the government to take immediate, effective action to address the root causes of the ongoing economic crisis. The organization called for a comprehensive economic strategy focused on the needs of the populace rather than the interests of political elites.
As the gap between the living conditions of citizens and those of government officials widens, CHRICED warned against superficial solutions that fail to address systemic issues, urging for genuine reforms that would restore hope and dignity to the Nigerian people.
The statement concluded with a call for the government to regain public trust by ensuring equitable distribution of economic benefits and truly listening to the voices of its citizens.
