COVID-19, Gender Violence: CHR Sensitizes Over 700 Youths in Kano Communities

AREWA AGENDA – Over 700 Youths in Tarauni, Nassarawa and Kano Municipal Local Government Area in Kano State have been sensitized on COVID-19 prevention and control measures as well as Gender Based Violence (GBV) and Harmful traditional practices by a community focused organization, the Community Health Research Initiative (CHR).

The activity by CHR which was carried out with the support of United Nations
Fund for Population Activities(UNFPA) covered three communities in Tarauni Local Government Area which includes Jaoji, Unguwa Uku and Tarauni Kudu area of the Local Council.

According to the Chairman Board of Trustee at the CHR, Dr Musa Muhammad Bello, one of the key reasons for selecting those areas was that the effect of the first wave of the novel coronavirus on this communities and the population density of these communities.

“We do believe this sensitization will record alot improvement in terms of outcome on community. CHR has been sensitizing people on various health issue since before the outbreak of COVID-19 in kano, and our contribution has brought about alot of positive impact on them.” Dr. Bello said.

The Health Educator, Tarauni Local Government, Alh. Sabo Shehu Kabara admitted that the previous sensitization by CHR in the community was one of the major factors that contributed in tackling COVID-19 in Tarauni Local Government, “When alot of people couldn’t afford to buy facemask, soap and sanitizers during the first wave of COVID-19, CHR provided it for free before some public and private organisation also followed the trail.” He said.

On his part, the Village Head of Unguwar uku Alh. Salihi Garba expressed his unreserved support to CHR /UNFPA intervention towards preventing the community from COVID-19/GBV and harmful traditional practises.

He expressed optimism that the intervention will bring about limitation of occurrence to a very large extent. “A lot of violence occur during the lockdown period in each community in the state and i cant say my community is out that but with this intervention, we are getting somewhere,” he stated.

Some of the beneficiaries in the communities expressed satisfaction and gratitude for the intervention.

Community Health Research Intiative (CHR) in support of United Nation Fund for Population (UNFPA) disbursed thousands of facemasks, hand sanitizers and soap which are some of the most important items meant for keeping COVID-19 at bay.
