Child Labour: ‘Why we Hawk the Streets,’ Underage Children Reveals

A cross section of underage children hawking different types of goods around the street of Danbare in kano have said they engaging in street trading in order to support the meagre income of their parents.
Selling groundnut in a transparent plastic bucket, 14 year old Zainab Abdullahi said she engages in street hawking to support her mother’s little income.

She said her mother’s income is so meagre that it could not take care of her family’s needs for month necessitating her resolve to support the woman by hawking groundnut.
Zainab, however expressed dissatisfaction with her situation saying she preferred going to school than hawking around the street.
Another hawker Salisu Aliyu a student from Janguza Secondary School, Kano said he hawked Yams around the street twice a week and attened school three time a week, stating that without hawking, it would be very difficult for his family to keep the Wolf away from the door.
He blamed his situation on the poor economy of the country and the uncaring and corrupt attitude of the country’s leaders.
